Reds – 0 Trevenson Vipers 2
The Reds played a really good match and all players gave their best with many players having to play in positions they were not used. Trevenson took an early lead with a fast deflected shot that edged inside the post. From then on the Reds tried their hardest to get the equaliser, while Owen organised the Goats defence to snuff out any counter attack with tackle after tackle and had a great game. Unfortunately they just were not able to get any shots past the Trevenson goalie who again for the second match running made the saves when required. With the last throw of the game Trevenson caught the the ball on the goal line and with the momentum bundled the ball out of the goalie’s outstreched hands and into the goal. However the team were thrilled by their efforts and all came through well.
Blues 1 – Truro Tigers 1
With the Tigers finding recent form , andwith only 7 Goats including one suffering from dodgy home cooking and the other with a boxer’s black eye this match had the potential to be tough one. And so it proved. The Goats started well, passing the ball well and finding space and great passes, but the Tigers took an early lead from a richocet around the box. However the Goats were comfortable with their play and for long periods of play, stayed in the Tigers half, but they were just not able to find the gap between the goalie and the post as shot after shot was save with reaction saves and defenders making last second blocks. After half time the Tigers were closing down the ball as soon as possible and really frustrating the Goats as they tried to get the equalizer. It was a brilliant display of determination by the Tigers defence and midfield. However a shot finally found the gap and the equalizer was scored. The remaining 15 minutes was spent in a cagey match of trying get the winner but also contain the fast counter attacks by and increasingly resurgent Tiger team. So by the end it was a fitting score as it reflected both teams efforts in a very exciting match.
Zambia 8 – Ivory Coast 7 penalties (0-0 ET)
After enduring the nerves of the two Goat matches I hope people settled down to ITV4 coverage of the Africa Cup, where the lumbering Elephants of Ivory Coast and their Premiership stars were humbled by the ‘Copper Bullets’ of Zambia. Zambia, the home to some of the largest elephant herds in Africa, showed no fear in the spotlight. It was a thrilling match to watch as the Zambians played without nerves and great flair while all the time keeping the Ivorian talent unnerved and flairless. All the moment of magic per formed by the Zambians. Within minutes it was obvious which team was going to play the best football and had the mental strength to not be scared and tense.
The Copper Bullets were in the ‘zone’ and if you believe in karma and the fravashi it was really all over from the beginning. There were just to many willing the Zambian victory – Drogba’s penalty miss just confirmed to those who needed prompting, that it was not going to be their day. There was a calm inevitability about the result in my mind – not like any of the matches in Kernow League
